The language of our respective neighbours is extremely significant in the Saarland and the Département de la Moselle. Extensive language skills are the gateway to the world. For many years, educational institutions and other interested institutions, both on the German and French sides of the border, have been discussing their experiences, implementing new language teaching schemes, exchanging specialised staff between their Kindergartens and schools, holding joint advanced training events, and much, much more.
Thanks to the joint efforts made in the Saarland and the Département de la Moselle and the support provided by the European Union in the form of INTERREG funding, it has been possible to develop and extend the system of language teaching to include Kindergartens and Ecoles Maternelles. A highlight of this working partnership between the Conseil Général de la Moselle, the Inspection Académique de la Moselle, the Christliche Erwachsenenbildung and the Ministry of Education, Culture and Science is the international congress „Multilingualism in Early Childhood as a Building Block in a Successful Educational Biography„ which will take place in Saarbrücken on 17th and 18th September 2007.
Numerous renowned academics from Germany and other countries will not only describe the methodical and didactic aspects as well as the neurophysiological background, but also hold workshops which provide information on planning possibilities, financing and the practical implementation of bilingual projects.
I have great pleasure in welcoming you to this Congress
